An educational field trip took place on Monday 29th February 2016, giving the opportunity to 3rd year Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering students from the University of Cyprus to visit the Eleftheria Square Site. The visit took place as part of the LOIS Builders Corporate Social Responsibility Programme for higher education student support.
The visit took place in two stages, the first part being a presentation of the Project and the technical challenges faced, by the Assistant Manager of the project, Dr. Iordanis Chidiroglou, held in the conference facilities of the Municipal Council, with the kind support of the Nicosia Municipality.
During the presentation, reference was made to the general framework of design, the main architectural features, the scale and timeframe of the construction of the project, as well as the technical particularities of the specific design by world renowned architect Zaha Hadid. With regards to these technical particularities, the construction methods used to overcome the complexity of the project were also outlined, as they are methods not usually used in contemporary construction.
At the end of the presentation, there was a tour of the site by the Project Director, Mr. Polis Polycarpou, in which the students came into contact directly with the basic components and materials of construction. The construction techniques used were also presented and the students were able to understand the practical implementation of the information given during the first presentation.
